When i turn on Guild Wars my Nvidia graphic card gets extremly hot.
Someone told me it can take up to 90 degrees celsius but mine goes up to 101 during GW play (using Ntune for temperature measure). Im using a big fan to cool it off atm but thats not a permanent solution. The graphic cards own fan doesnt cool the card of enough.

My simple questions:
Can i fix this without buying a new cooler?
In case, how?

101 C is intense, I'm surprised that card hasn't folded and rolled in it's grave atm.

Maybe try HWmonitor from www.cpuid.com just to make sure that it is really reporting at that temp.

You can possibly drop temperatures by applying new thermal-paste, after some years the thermal-paste may weaken, pulling off the heat-sink and preferably applying Arctic-Silver 5 could help a little bit.

EDIT: Ohh yeah, good suggestion Ec]-[oMaN, I always forget. Dust out the card, make sure the fan is spinning and make sure that it doesn't show resistance to spinning when you try to move it (While the computer is off obviously). You can also try pulling the card out completely and dusting out everything else as well, if there is dust.

Thank you guys.
I vacum cleaned it today without any deifference, but i guess the compressed air ll do a better job.
Anyway HW monitor showed the exact same degrees as nTune.

So i guess i should get a bottle of compressed air!

Aye, blow the air up through the video card's heat sink, and see if anything comes out. Vacuum won't really do much for getting dust out of those places.

That's almost 214 Fahrenheit. I would definitely look into liquid cooling, or a better cooling system. That thing is going to be good for only roasting marshmallows soon.

Yup try compressed air first. If that doesn't solve the problem it's time to use google and look at a guide for replacing a video card HSF and buying something better and re-applying the thermal paste. Also remember summer is here and unless you have air conditioning ambient temps increase, when such happens, overall air flow in cases need to be increased.

Speaking from my recent experience in updating my nvidia drivers current at forceware 84.....(yes I'm still running a 6800GS) dating from back in 2006 to the new BLOATWARE that is 169+forceware, I noticed control panel taking 2x longer to start, I found it more confusing, and temps reported using NTUNE which I hate were 10-20c higher than what my 84's+coolbits are detecting.

That card is a POS!!!! I had that exact same card, it had a 1 year warranty. I had it for about 6 months. I played CoD 2 for about 2 minutes and then a smelled something funny and then the computer shut off. Graphics card just died on me without any previous warning. I did no over clocking or anything, and I didn't play on my computer 24/7. CPU runs at an average of 32-36 degrees Celsius so I was surprised that this thing was overheating. So I sent it back and I got a new one (I think it was new...). The stupid thing died 7 months later and my warranty expired. My advice: get a new card. My 7900 GS runs just about the same as the other one (3 year warrant too

I had the same problem with my 7800. it died a few months after getting it. I was able to get a free replacement, but still had occasional waviness like the card was overheating. I gave up on it and upgraded to a 8600. After not being able to play NWN above 8 fps for over a year and the recent drivers, I doubt I'll buy another NVidia card.

Fusa do you mean NWN2 or NWN cause NWN2 has probably the biggest error engine ever -_- i can send you and optimized ini for NWN2 that runs NWN2 @ about 60+fps =)

But back to topic :
i got Dual 7800 gt's since they came out and their still running wonderfull @ 40 - 50 °C (yes got to clean em again)
and in the old nvidia pannel the treshold for slowdown was set @ 140°C standard if i recall right but i'll leave it to rahja since he's got a lot more experience with this stuff

But yeah i suggest you look if the fan of you're 7800 gtx hasn't died out and like the others said clean it out with a can of presurized air if all that fails i think you'll have to look out for another fan (if you know how to replace it) or another gfx card

Keep spraying compressed air until no dust comes out.

If you smoke in the house, you'll have to disassemble the heatsink and mine the tar out.

Yeah a few years ago I had to clean out a friend's computer... it was uber disgusting, his parents were both heavy smokers, so there was a lot of junk in there. Compressed air is win.

Also, I've had a 7800 gs for quite some time with no problems (I frequently dust out my whole system, so that probably helps.)

Side note to fusa - you've been unlucky. Don't give up on the best graphics card manufacturers on the planet due to two bad experiences - you'll regret it.

Eh. I'm not sure i agree with that "best" bit. They may be up on speed(when drivers work right), but i think ati has better reliability and support. Some would also say ati has better image quality in some areas.

NWN1 theres a been well known issues with the NWN1 and nvidia drivers for 8600 and 8800 since the beginning of 2007. Unfortunately non of the "fixes" I've tried from Bioware's boards have worked. I've been able to play NWN2 ok but its so buggy and ridiculously easy theres no point.

Both HWmonitor and Ntunes are showing the same temperature.
I guess i will send it somewhere so they can fix it, i have some other problemas that also needs to be fixed.

[o/t again, sorry] Sidenote to Blackhearted: Don't mistake me for an nVidia fanboy, because I'm not. I've used whatever graphics solution is best at the time. I've progressed from Voodoo I and II to nVidia and ATI via Matrox. ATI have and do make excellent cards - my son is currently running an x800 and is shortly getting a second-hand X1900XTX - both great cards of their time.

I choose nVidia nowadays because they are always that one step ahead of ATI, in the same way that, in recent years, Intel have been at least one step ahead of AMD.

At the moment, I see no signs of that changing, so I advocate nVidia whenever the topic arises.
